#235 - Red Dot Special
Tuesday, April 15th, 2008What the hell? Where are the comics?
KC and I are working on a semi-secret project that will be going up soooooooooon. In order to get our ducks in a row and shits in a stack, we have to put HS on a mini-break. Long time readers should be used to this sort of bullshit from me by now. New readers, don’t fret. We’ll be back soonish.
*********************************
Man, I had the most fucked up dream last night. I dreamed that I went to bed without updating with the latest comic. How fucked is that?
For those worried about the not-as-frequent-as-they-should-be updates, apologies. There are things happening that could be potentially very exciting, but it’s taking up a lot of my time and I’m not able to pump out the scripts as fast as I would like. But, I’M TRYING.

Not to worry Fred…a sporadically updating Hate Song is infinitely preferable to there not being a Hate Song at all.
April 15th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Tim’s happy face is so happy!!!!! cudos KC!
Were Malachi and Lewis suckin’ on that thing for toothless vampirin’, or did the cops plant E’s (E-motional’s) in the car?
tampon - drug puns are tough
did the cops plant cunt-rag cocaine ………….
April 15th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Exciting things better by more of those danged flasks! Or anything Hatesong related at all! Damnit!
April 16th, 2008 at 9:48 am
only thing I could ask for in regards to the comic not being posted is just a heads up, “hey, I was busy no comic today.” its all good though.
April 18th, 2008 at 9:08 am
That is so wrong, and yet I fear oestrogen leakage on a near daily basis…
April 18th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Wow that’s pretty gross. Grosser than cannibalism and sex with animals. Nice work.
April 20th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Comic good. Pleased. Womanly feelings bad. Ug.
April 22nd, 2008 at 4:41 pm
Man, this comic sucks now. Why don’t you go back to drawing it yourself dude? Or just end it.. I can’t take this awful artwork anymore. I could do better with a crippled foot and a piece of chalk. Seriously. Pathetic.
April 24th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
John: If you don’t like the comic, then stop reading. I think that KC’s artwork kicks some serious ass and have been happy with the direction.
There are plenty of other webcomics that would be happy to have you as a reader.
April 24th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
I’m calling shenanigans on this comic. I disagree with John, the art is just fine. The problem is the constant interruptions. I don’t buy all your excuses about side work and secret projects, blah, blah, blah. I can think of many other comics that have a three day a week schedule and still manage to post on time while doing side work, working day jobs and selling merch. Some of them have become very successful and have employees to do all the crap work for them. The problem isn’t that you have too much stuff to do. All those other artists have the same number of hours in their days as you and they manage to stuck to a schedule. The problem is you’re lazy and unorganized.
This comic is pretty good, but it’s not so good that I’m willing to wait weeks in between updates and you’re right Fred, there are plenty of others who are happy who have me as a reader. And with them I’ll actually have something to read.
April 24th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Buy it or not, them’s the facts.
My current work day is generally a minimum of 12-14 hours. That’s between the day job and my freelance work (I letter comic books and do other production work). On top of that I have 2 comic series that have been signed and are currently in a push to complete.
The “secret project” is in fact happening. It’s something that KC and I have been contracted to do. The link is above.
That I’m lazy and unorganized is crap. I’m quite organized — but I have to take care of the paid work first.
The interruptions suck, I know, but they are unavoidable and often unpredictable. If a client sends me work today that needs to be done yesterday, the non-paid stuff has to take a back seat — as much as I hate to do so.
Anyhow, sorry to everyone who feels let down, but the interruptions are going to happen periodically.

Ranting and John are cocksuckers! I like this comic and its art work! If you don’t like it then why even reading it… Jesus Christ, this story is worth waiting for an update. Go watch a fucking soap opera if you need daily updates so bad. Not everyone can be a full time web comic artist! Ranting, It sounds like you’ve never worked a real job in your life. John just sounds like he’s drunk…
May 11th, 2008 at 10:48 am
I apologize for my earlier comments - I WAS a little drunk while making that post.
What I was trying to say is that you’re an AMAZING artist, Fred. KC is a pretty good artist.
Let’s take a semi-successful cartoon - For example, Family Guy.
Say half-way through the season they changed artists, so that it went from looking like this -> http://z.about.com/d/animatedtv/1/7/c/K/FamilyGuyParty.jpg
To this. -> http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa127/kingstevo_2007/untitled.jpg
How would you feel about that..? Would you lose interest? Feel disenchanted, perhaps? It’d be like having Family Guy replaced by the ‘Family Guy Fanfiction’
I wish you’d just stuck out making a few more pages of Hate Song, with you as the artist - you could have ’scrapped’ together some sort of ending. Then you could have made a NEW comic, with KC as the artist. - It’s not too late either, you could give this comic the ending it deserves with the ORIGINAL art.
I am not trying to tell you what to do, I’m just saying that you performed the ol’ switcheroo on us, and I’m surprised that I’m the only one who has noticed/cared.
KC, you are a good artist. But Fred is REALLY REALLY good. I hope you understand that my complaint has nothing to do with your work, it’s merely the way in which your work was introduced into this already established comic.
Unlike ranting I don’t really care about the updating process - You have a life outside of this webcomic and however long it takes you to give updates is your own business. I really don’t mind “wasting” 1.5 seconds of my life every week to check and see if there is an update. If there is, ‘Yay!’ - If not, oh well. It’s not like I had to climb a small mountain and battle billy goats to find that out.

Hi Fred & KC
Amazing webcomic, this one! I love the awesome and at times (well, all the time) grotesque humor. I really have no trouble with the artist switch, KC’s style fits the comic well - Even though I would like to see an injection of Fred’s drawings from time to time.
I really hope you update this again soon, but you know that jazz.
Just wanted to send you my compliments from Denmark! Bet’cha didn’t know you had readers from here huh?
Well now you do.

Mannn..I was having fun with those updates.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:02 am
Well, I’m sick of it. I’ve been keeping tabs on this site for years now, and fuckit, why bother.
Good bye.
May 25th, 2008 at 7:07 am
Hey, Fred, don’t let the haters get you down, this thing is pretty good, and art side, it’s the writing that REALLY makes it.
Neither you or KC is exactly the better artist, though I think your art style fits the comic better, as long as it’s you who’s writing it, it’s still worth reading. Plus, guys, think about it: If Fred is under pressure and needs to BOTH write and draw, things will be even more rarely updated than if he only needs to write and can rely on KC to get his art on.
May 29th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
I like KC’s art style. It just took some getting used to. Now that I’m used to it, I eagerly await more updating.
June 4th, 2008 at 4:45 am
Well, not unlike others, I also preferred Freds style, but KC is still awesome. Like Spazz, I just needed to adapt. I have read from number 1 to 235 in one day, that’s how amazing this comic is. I just have to say, keep up the good work; I just found my new favourite webcomic.

@claudosaur:
Prepare yourself for disappointment my friend.
June 15th, 2008 at 5:00 am
No. You’re not trying. I look at everything and I see it. It wasn’t funny especially the youtube one. . If you’re out of ideas and you can’t think of anything just say so. Don’t be a fucking douche and try to keep the attention you were getting before and bite the fucking bullet. You’ll have to face it eventually. If you do in fact have plans, which I doubt, then tell them to someone who isn’t a lazy slob. I mean if I knew where you were in real life I’d beat the hell out of you.
June 15th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Sing it Gorilla! Not only is he all full of shit about some super cool secret project but then he gets all whiny on us. “Oh come on everybody, like my comic even though I never publish and my new artists draws like a retarded 9 year old. It doesn’t matter that I never do anything, you should all like me because ‘I’m trying.’” Aww poor baby. This isn’t elementary school pal, you don’t get a ribbon just for showing up (not that you are) if you want success you better put your money where your mouth is and show some fucking comics.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:07 am
Hugz for Fred and KC! Both you guys are great comic artists, and I really enjoy your work. I’m not going to bitch to you about how long it takes to update, because I know that just doing any creative work at all takes a lot of effort. Imho its better that we get the odd update thats worth seeing than a quick scribble job that wouldn’t match up to the quality we expect from this comic. Sure its disappointing when you don’t get to see regular updates (anyone read combustible orange?) but there’s enough negativity in the world without giving out about a webcomic, which with respect I believe Fred and KC will agree is not life or death stuff. So John, gorilla and others, take a deep breath, click on the links tab, and check out some other webcomics. Then in a few weeks, when you aren’t even thinking about it, hatesong will pop into your mind and as if by magic there will be an update! Or not. But seriously, is it really worth bitching about?
Ok I’ve rambled on long enough.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Thanks Brian.
Youmakemesad, I never asked anyone to “like my comic, even though I never publish”. I’m happy that people like it, and the archive is still up for those just discovering it to read. There was a time where I could devote hours a day to the strip. That time is long gone. Life moves on, priorities change.
I have other stuff that needs to get done and KC I currently trying to fight our way through this other book. Even if we weren’t, I wouldn’t have the time for Hate Song right now.
What can I say? Am I going to worry about making Gorilla and youmakemesad happy again? Get over it guys. Like Brian said, it’s just a webcomic. There are millions more out there. Some of them are even good. Go read a few. Then, maybe go outside and have a walk, ride a bike, read a book, watch a movie.
There’s more to life than a stupid webcomic.
June 17th, 2008 at 1:50 am
Fred, don’t worry about those that whine. You owe us nothing, and vice versa. You and KC make a fine product that you offer to us for free, and many thanks for it. I would like more updates, but I’ve got a book to read too. Hell, it’s summer in my hemisphere so perhaps I’ll leave my rock for some sun.
July 4th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
I see all the pricks who just abandon this comic because of the art, and it pisses me off, but for the reasoning more than the act of leaving.
I don’t like KC’s as much, it’s still good, but I think it’ll just take him some time to get a better feel for your characters.
The art isn’t the problem, though. Anyone who leaves a comic for art just kinda sucks. The problem is the updating. Seriously, you come back after a year+ of no updates and say “HateSong’s back! Rejoice!” And we did rejoice most merrily, but then after a month or so you stop making more. Understandable that you have a real life, and that of course comes first, but I’d much rather have more HateSong than I would your Things side-project that hasn’t had a real update period.
Their reasoning is poor, but I can almost understand leaving the comic, it’s like trying to get a girl in bed you know will never put out: eventually you just have to give up.
I’m not leaving, this is too damn good to leave after only a few months. If we weathered the last hiatus, we can weather this one, but at least make some official hiatus announcement or something.

Commenting on epic webcomic.
