#225 - Turd Tools

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

To the people of Portland: Dudes, I am going down to Portland this weekend with my wife. Aside from Powell’s is there anything in town that we absolutely should do? Any good bands playing? Sites that need to be seen? Restaurants that need to be eaten at?

To everyone else: I got nothing, sorry.

There’s supposed to be an ice carving demonstration at Pioneer Courthouse Square this Friday from noon to 5pm, and Willamette Week has a list of goings-on for this weekend (http://wweek.com/events/3414/).. but I don’t know how awesome anything on that list is. Zien Hong on NE 53rd and Sandy (across from Cosmic Monkey Comics) has kickass Chinese food.

There’s something so simply brilliant about measuring stick toilet paper that I’m surprised I’ve never even thought about it.

    It’s in inches ?

I though they were in Canada ? They count in inches in Canada ?

  4. Fred Says:

Raf: Canadians still mostly seem to use inches and feet when talking smaller distances. We use metric for just about everything else.

Also, people here use pounds when talking about their weight, not kilograms.

We’re middle of the road people.

Two words: Voodoo Doughnuts Home of the bacon-maple bar. It’s amazing.

aUdioquark: Do they have other good shit? I’m a vegetarian, so would not be trying the bacon-maple bar anytime soon.

Mate, you gotta check out Montage. It’s right under the Morrison Bridge and it is the most fucking fantastic cajun food you will ever have without going down Weezianah way. Seriously, you’ll love it. Also as someone said, Voodoo Donuts, and Ford’s on Fifth. They are both down near China Town. Ford’s has burgers that will blow your mind. For Chinese, hit up the Republic Cafe. It’s in the same general area as Voodoo / Ford’s, and they’ve got some bangin’ stuff.

So glad I checked back here on a whim today. Fucking awesome new stuff, great to have you back.

  8. Joggles Says:

Oh shit, totally forgot. Montage has a full Vegan / Vege menu as well with some ridiculous Jambalaya. That would be my number one recommendation. Voodoo also has a bunch of vegan donuts available.

you need to check out Reading Frenzy, its a kick ass small press/zine book store.
Also for good coffee and sassy waitresses I highly recommend Beulah land,
If the saturday market is running, you should check that out
    everything…just wander about

Never been myself, but Powell’s bookstore is on my list.

Word. Stumptown coffee can be purchased at most fine restaurants and is supposedly the best in the world. I’d recommend Movie Madness out SE Belmont around 43rd or so. Biggest craziest movie rental shop / museum to cult movies ever. Wanna find the ear from Blue Velvet? It’s there. The knife from Psycho? John Wayne’s lever action from Outlaw Josey Wales? All in, honky.

They totally have vegan/veggie options too. I’m just a fattie and find bacon amazingly sexy.

    Their website’s here: http://voodoodoughnut.com/
